2010 NY Mets Opening Day Recap

Sadly, I was unable to attend the 2010 Mets home opener at Citi Field this year and was forced to watch the game from my wonderfully awesome slingbox.  I am glad I tuned in however as it was a great game with Johan Santana pitching 6 strong innings, David Wright showing opposite field strength with a 2-run blast and the new guy Jason Bay slapping a triple in his NY debut.  Rod Barrajas had 2 hits and it was great to see some new faces getting their jobs done.

Hopefully Jose Reyes’ thyroid issue clears up quickly and he gets back on the diamond quickly as it looks like pitching is going to be a bugaboo for the Metsies this year.  Outside of Santana, we don’t have another premiere starter which will make it very difficult for the Mets to compete in the ultra competitive NL East.  We do have some power in the line-up and when Beltran gets back it should help the pitching staff with run support but I am pretty nervous about the 2, 3, 4 and 5 starters.  Looks like we will have to see what happens and I hope I am wrong! The Cardinals are in town and that just makes me mad. Last year the Mets lost to the Cardinals in Game 7 of the NLCS and it just so happened that for the first time in my life I actually had World Series tickets, should the Mets have made it. Well, not even “The Catch” by Endy Chavez could propel us into the World Series…I am over it…well not entirely.

So it is with great pleasure I report that the Mets have been dealing the Cards, nothing but losses this year and last nights 11th inning heroics by Shawny Green allowed me to rest peacefully.

Mike Maroth pitched a great game allowing 1 run and 2 hits. The Mets has Jorge Sosa on the mound and he pitched decent as well. It was when they turned the game over to Feliciano with bases-loaded, when my stomach started to get tight. The Mets bullpen looked like the bullpen of old and I hope this is a trend that continues.

If your a Mets fan, you know it has been a while since we were able to bring the broom from out of the closet. Our last chance for a sweep was when the Yankees were in town and we all know how that went, who is Tyler Clippard again? The Mets were lead by another stellar performance by John Maine. Maine has pitched well the last two starts and I believe this is a sign that the Mets are heating up. The Mets got off to a great start when Jose Reyes kicked things off with a double that turned into the game’s first run when Oakland’s Jack Cust made a throwing error.

It was a great day to see a game only next year I am getting seats in the shade!  Unless they come out with a new sunsreen like SPF Irish!

Well, the Mets did it.  They broke a 5 game losing streak and at the same time they ended the Yankees 9 game winning streak, beating the Yanks 2-0 in Fridays in game 4 of the Mets/Yankees inter league play.  As a Mets fan I was fearing the worst, but I was pleasantly surprised by the aggressive level of play exhibited by Willie Randolph’s Mets.

Oliver Perez went 7 and a third innings in a stellar performance.  However there was one inning where it looked like Ollie was about to show signs of that 7 walk game in the beginning of the season.

West Coast Woes Make Five in a Row!

West coast swings are always tough for me as I fight to stay up and watch the Mets play.  It looks like the Mets are having a hard time staying awake on the field.  Three nights in a row I watched the Mets score the first run on their latest trip to Dodger Stadium, and three days in a row the Mets failed to close the deal.  Last year, when the Mets scored first, it was a sign trend that more often than not, led to a victory in the win column.

The Mets are losers of 5 in a row and they are finding interesting ways to lose.  Primarily is has involved Pitching.  Where has the Mets pitching gone?  I know a 5 game losing streak is not cause for the panic button, hey just look at the Yankees, who are hotter than at any point in this early season.  To be honest, I am a bit worried about going into Yankee Stadium, and if I were the Mets, I would be too.
